Education bears fruit (bricks!)
An attempt was made in 2009 to start Rock of Wisdom Academy, but it failed due to lack of resources. These young men making the bricks were the first students! They then went to the nearest alternative schools 10 km away but didn’t finish, instead dropping out to become farm labourers. They also got into child marriages, drug and substance abuse. However due to our now successful project, they have changed and are supporting their children in our school.
A challenging 4 km walk
In a remarkable display of dedication and resilience, Rock of Wisdom School students and staff joined the national effort towards achieving good health and well-being. As part of the National Mass Drug Administration (MDA) campaign to eliminate schistosomiasis (bilharzia), they embarked on a challenging 4 km journey to the nearest centre to receive treatment.
This initiative, aimed at combating the spread of bilharzia, is a testament to the school’s commitment to supporting government efforts in promoting health and well-being. We applaud the bravery and determination of our students and staff who participated in this important health drive.
The treatment, administered using Praziquantel, is a crucial step towards eliminating schistosomiasis as a public health concern in Zimbabwe.
Ruvarashe’s story
This young lady lives in a rural village with her parents, sister and two brothers. Their single story one-room home has no kitchen, toilet, running water or electricity.
The children have to walk 3 kilometres to the nearest river to collect water for their everyday needs.
Their round thatched storeroom has been made available for the two sisters to sleep in, as there was not enough room in the main building for all six family members.
At the end of the first video, you will see that Ruvarashe has some severe sores on her back and legs. This was an outbreak of some kind. Other children in the village also had the same kind of sores.
Pastor Junior took Ruvarashe to the clinic to receive medication. Later she took five other children to be treated. They all had to be quarantined until they were healed. All the four siblings are now at Rock of Wisdom School. In future, when school children are in need of medical care, it will be addressed promptly.
There are at least 100 other families in that area who all have the same living conditions.
